Sarah Victoria Thomas Composer

BIOGRAPHY

Sarah Thomas is a British composer and arranger who focuses on contemporary classical composition, with a background in writing music for sync.

Sarah studied music at The University of Surrey and subsequently composition under the mentorship of Joe Duddell.  After moving to South West France in 2013 at the age of 27, she became a student and friend of the late Atarah Ben Tovim who taught her both performance studies in piano and flute as well as advising on her compositions until her death in 2022.

Sarah’s 2022 Paname for Flute Sextet is dedicated to the memory of Ben Tovim.

In 2020 she signed her first publishing deal with Exodus Music & Film for her joint piano album, Modern Piano Miniatures Vol. 1, co-written with Duddell.  The two went on to write a follow-up album, Modern Piano Miniatures Vol. 2, under the same publisher in the Spring of 2022.

Later in 2022, under the guidance of Duddell, Thomas arranged English rock band James’s hit song, Laid, which was later performed in the band’s 2023 Lasted Tour around the United Kingdom and in Athens, Greece, under the baton of Duddell, and also recorded for the band’s ‘Be Opened By The Wonderful’ album of the same year.  As one critic noted, Thomas and Duddell’s version of the hit “takes something familiar and much loved by James fans and [reinvents] it in a way which defies all expectations.  Genius.”

In 2021, Thomas and Duddell collaborated to create an online composition course, Time To Compose, in partnership with The Carducci Quartet. This initiative provided aspiring composers with the opportunity to workshop their œuvres with the renowned quartet, gaining valuable insights and feedback. As part of the course, Sarah's first string quartet was workshopped, receiving high praise and affirming her commitment to nurturing new talent in the world of composition.

Sarah went on to record her first string trio, Ex Corde Meo, in December 2023 with a group of musicians put together in Paris by violinist Daniel Galitsky, including the principal violist of the Royal Danish Symphony Orchestra.

In January 2024, Sarah co-founded Shabby Chic Musique with saxophonist & clarinetist Chris Caldwell, and flautist Susie Hodder-Williams.  Essentially 'music camp for adults', Shabby Chic Musique is an initiative aimed at enabling adults to escape the daily grind and connect with music, surrounded by like-minded people in the comfort of a castle.  The first event launched to great success in South West France in April 2024 and the second event will be taking place in 2025.

On April 20, 2024, the exploratory movement from Sarah Thomas's saxophone quartet, Perdita, was premiered by the Delta Saxophone Quartet in Kingston, England. The performance was well-received, reflecting the quartet's distinctive sound and Sarah's approach to composition. This event represented an important moment in her artistic journey, as she continues to explore and share her musical voice...
